Special Projects
Appointed by the arts organisation a-space and MGLinear to provide designs for a truly unique and stimulating project to enhance the Bargate monument and gallery in the centre of Southampton. The Bargate is the medieval entrance to the city of Southampton and dates back 800 years since it’s construction. The building is a significant piece of the history of England and currently offers the opportunity for young budding artists to exhibit their work within the first floor gallery. Our task was split into phases of design starting with transforming part of the first floor into a cafe and meeting space that will increase the revenue of the monument and create an income. Secondly, we had the task of using sympathetic and unobtrusive additions to the front of the monument to act as an entrance way to the newly refurbished first floor. In addition to the ground floor entranceway we are to design an English Heritage gift shop within the ground floor archways and an external eating and dining area. Last of all is a scheme to create a covered roof space that will extend the capacity and provide a cutting edge viewing platform in which to dine and socialise. Working closely with English Heritage and Southampton City Council officials we have began to lay the foundation ideas and begin the journey of approvals and funding to carry out the designs and tranform this spectacular peice of architecture with modern editions that will preserve and contribute to it’s existence.
